In the preliminary go-round of the National Reining Breeders Classic, Todd Sommers had a flawless run on Whiz It A Chic (Who Whiz It x Chic Out Mama x Smart Chic Olena), owned by Stoney Russell, Longview, Texas. They scored a 222.
That was the magic number for Sommers. He made the Open and Intermediate Open division finals of this prestigious event, taking place at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas.
The NRBC is known to pay well and pay deep. Since all NRBC Open finalists earn approximately $6,000, Sommers knew he had reached a coveted milestone. The 45-year-old Whitesboro, Texas, trainer is NRHA’s newest Million Dollar Rider.
“I feel very honored to be in the company of the elite riders in this industry,” Sommers said.
Whiz It A Chic, a handsome 4-year-old bay stallion bred by Dawn Shaver, Millstadt, Ill, has been a willing partner for Sommers. Coming to Katy, he had already added NRHA earnings of $18,374 to Sommers’ resume.
At the 2009 All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity in Columbus, Ohio, they were third in the Open division and won the Intermediate Open.
Sommers is a two-time NRHA Futurity Open Champion, and was the first to earn a $150,000 paycheck from the event in 2000, whe he rode Von Reminic (Reminic x Von Freckles x Colonel Freckles) to the Championship.
“Winning the NRHA Futurity is the biggest thrill of all, but joining the other million dollar riders justifies all the hard work, long hours, and sweat that a trainer puts into his occupation. I’m thrilled!” – TODD SOMMERS
